Overview

The Denon DP-400 turntable features a re-engineered S-Shape curved tonearm that optimises tracking angle at any point on the record, reducing distortion and preserving your vinyl. The tonearm automatically lifts and stops playback when the record ends, protecting your albums and cartridge. The weighted, belt-driven platter supports 33 1/3, 45, and 78 rpm speeds, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of vinyl records.

An integrated phono equaliser creates an open, detailed soundstage true to the original recording. The turntable includes a high-quality MM cartridge and supports MC cartridges for audiophile flexibility. The removable dust cover eliminates vibrations and doubles as a display stand for your album covers.

Cartridge Compatibility and Recommendations

The DP-400 ships with a pre-mounted MM cartridge (stylus life approx. 400 hours, replacement stylus DSN-85). The built-in phono stage supports MM-level output. For low-output MC cartridges (e.g., Denon DL-103), an MC-capable phono preamp or step-up transformer is required. High-output MC cartridges are compatible without additional equipment.

Recommended cartridge upgrades include:

• Audio-Technica AT-VM95ML (MM, MicroLine) – excellent tracking and reduced surface noise
• Nagaoka MP-110 (MM, elliptical) – smooth top end, ideal for bright systems
• Ortofon 2M Blue (MM, nude elliptical) – detailed and airy sound
• Denon DL-110 (High-output MC) – MC dynamics with MM input compatibility

The Denon DL-103 (low-output MC) requires heavier tonearms and MC gain; not recommended without external MC stage on the DP-400.

Setup Tips

1. Level the platter using shims or an isolation platform for optimal performance.
2. Set tracking force to 2.0 g and anti-skate to 2 for the included cartridge.
3. Use the phono equaliser ON if connecting line-in; turn OFF if your amplifier has a PHONO input.
4. Remove the dust cover before playback and store it on the included stand.
